Here's a bit of movie footage taken with our shiny new camera in
mid-December. In fact, it's the same bit of footage five times (except
that the first one is shorter because the file format is huge). Your
task, should you choose to accept it, is to find out which ones work on
your computer. Note: don't take part in this task if cute baby clips
are not your cup of tea…
Just for fun, there's a little animated
- MJPEG, 823K
(straight out of the camera)
- MPEG1, 158K
- MPEG2, 169K
- MPEG4, 178K
- H263+, 188K
possiblynot suitable for use as a LiveJournal icon. This probably
isn't very efficiently compressed and the 100K limit means it's small
and quite short — there are probably better ways to make it. On edit:
I ought to have read the docs first, as the LiveJournal limit is 40K, not 100K!
Note that since the server bandwidth is limited to about 64kbps it will
take on average half a minute to download clips 2–5 if no one
else is using the connection, and rather longer for clip 1. Don't feel
obliged to download all of them, but at least try to find one that works.
Which (if any) had the best quality relative to file size?
All more or less the same
They were all terrible
What's your platform?
PC-based Unix (e.g., Linux, FreeBSD)
No more tickyboxes!
By the way, if anyone actually knows anything about movie encoding
and has advice about bitrates and so on, do feel free to comment.
